It happened in an instant.
Maybe for you, it was an unexpected layoff.
A long-anticipated retirement.
Or the quiet burnout that made you whisper, “I can’t keep doing this.”
Suddenly, the title you wore like armor—Director, VP, Senior Strategist—slipped from your shoulders, and you were left staring at your reflection, asking: “Who am I… without the role?”
In Blog 1, we explored what happens when you feel the nudge to leave before you’re “ready.” Blog 2 focused on what to do when the role is taken from you. But this blog is for the woman who has already stepped away. The title is gone, and now the question becomes: Who am I now?
And that, my sister, is the sacred beginning.
When Who You Were No Longer Feels Like Who You Are
The world teaches us to introduce ourselves by what we do.
But Scripture reminds us: we are more than our job descriptions.
More than our LinkedIn bios.
More than the salary range attached to our last position.
Here’s the truth I need you to know:
You are not lost. You are being reintroduced—to yourself.
Your identity isn’t something you have to chase or create. It’s something you reclaim.
And that reclamation starts not with hustle, but with healing.
1. You Existed Before the Title—and You’ll Thrive Beyond It
That title may have opened doors. It may have brought respect. But it never defined your value.
Before your first job, God already called you chosen, seen, and significant. He knit your gifts into your
DNA—not your resume.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”
— Jeremiah 1:5
The world may introduce you by title, but Heaven calls you by name.
2. Your Purpose Was Never in the Job Description
You weren’t placed in that role simply to manage people, meet metrics, or hit KPIs. You were placed there to lead with love, influence with integrity, and advocate with courage.
When that assignment ended, your purpose didn’t.
Like Esther, your platform may change—but your calling remains: To show up for
“such a time as this.”
God doesn’t demote. He redirects.
3. God Ends Chapters to Begin New Ones—Not to Abandon You
Let’s be honest. Losing a role or leaving a position can feel like failure.
But endings don’t mean you missed it.
They often mean you’ve outgrown it.
Jesus’ crucifixion looked like defeat—until resurrection morning.
Your transition may feel painful, but it’s producing something sacred.
Grief can be the ground where new purpose grows.
And that new purpose?
It won’t come from striving.
It will come from surrendering—and stepping into a redefined, re-centered version of you.
One of my clients—a nationally recognized school leader and principal—had spent years performing at a high level, mentoring others, and leading with excellence. But behind the accolades and public success, the cost of carrying it all began to show.
She came to coaching not because she had failed, but because she had forgotten how to rest. Forgotten what it meant to be still and supported herself.
“At a time where I needed guidance and support, Cheryl helped me to gain clarity about how to manage balance between my work life and personal life,” she shared.
“I walk away from every interaction with her focused, confident, and ready to act.”
Her story is a reminder: sometimes reclaiming your identity means remembering you’re more than what you accomplish. You’re worthy even when you pause. You’re powerful even when you rest.
This season of rediscovery is not about reinventing yourself. It’s about remembering who God created you to be before the world handed you labels.
Here’s where I invite you to begin:
● Acknowledge the grief of what’s ended, but don’t get stuck in it.
● Reflect on the moments you felt most alive—not just the most “accomplished.”
● Identify what you’re called to carry forward, and what was meant to be laid down.
You may not have language for your new chapter yet. That’s okay. That’s where I come in.
